Featured Speaker for Friday, June 13th

Lynn Kane of Puppy Girl Designs

 About Me from Lynn

" I live, as I have most of my life, in rural Rensselaer County in upstate New York.  After high school, I enlisted in the US Marine Corps. When I came home, I fluttered from here to there as young people do, and began working in the construction industry, eventually becoming a paralegal specializing in construction.  I loved my job!

Learn more about Lynn and her work atcounty, I volunteered with the local rescue squad and fire department.  I was ecstatic! I quickly became a NYS EMS and Fire Instructor and a national Instructor in Farmedic and Traumatic Brain Injury.  I’ve just started my 33rd  year in emergency services, and the last 16 years have been full-time. And with all of this action comes the need to slow down, to decompress.

I love to turn someone else’s trash into a treasure, believe strongly in reducing our footprint on the environment, to recycle and reuse existing items, and to make do with what we have.  I also believe in the power of appreciating people over things.  A perfect afternoon is stitching with my Puppy Girls snuggled close by, watching the birds and wildlife do their thing, a crockpot simmering, and quilt buddies or friends chatting with me.

The Puppy Girl in the logo is my beloved Heidi.  A beautiful, and smart (!), Border Collie, Heidi, came to me at age 9, after Hurricane Katrina, and stayed for several years. We were inseparable, and it was during our time together that I started designing in earnest.  Puppy Girl Emma, also a Border Collie, came to us as a rescue after terrible tornadoes in Tennessee, a few months before Heidi left. Little more than a year later, Puppy Girl Gabby came to Emma and me as a puppy mill rescue.  The Girls are so devoted to each other, it’s sweet to observe."

From Basic to Beautiful & How I Got Here

Friday, June 13th @10:30 am

The history of “Redwork” is reviewed through antique commercial publications, antique needle cases, blocks, and quilts.  Red (or Blue) Work was done on a white background with only one color of floss.  Fast forward a few years, and now in my work, there is color everywhere (even black backgrounds) with realistic colors and details – From Basic to Beautiful!

“Finishing Touches with Unique Borders & Bindings”

Friday June 13th @ 2:30 pm

You’ve spent time and effort stitching your project, so why just sew a strip of fabric around it? There is a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and techniques (most simple, some not) that used alon, or in combination, can add your special touch.

Dutchess Heritage Quilt Show History

Origins

The Dutchess Heritage Quilt Show began in the 1981 as a way to show off the talent of quilters in the Hudson Valley. It took place biennially at Dutchess Community College on odd years during Columbus Day weekend. Due to the pandemic, the show went on hiatus and is returning in 2025 at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds!

The Creative Team

This show is led by Tara Reilly, Holly Harvey, and Meegan Veeder-Shave with assistance from a number of volunteers. If you're interested in volunteering, contact us!
